For many centuries in the West, marriage was considered indissoluble union “until death do us part.” Over time things have changed, the practice of divorce has gained greater legal and social burden, undermining the principle of eternal love, making it somewhat reversible.
In the beginning the divorce was based on so-called adversarial system: a spouse accused the other of any sin to get separation. Today, because marriage can be dissolved, no longer needed accuse, just much less, is enough to say that cohabitation has become intolerable, without dwelling on it. Divorce is not, therefore, a punishment for those who have violated the rules marriage, but a remedy to a situation that has been created.
